Lawmakers also look to provide funding for income verification contracts to help keep SNAP error rates low as higher rates will cost the state millions.
The budget for the Mississippi Department of Human Services was set this week, with legislators agreeing on roughly $94.6 million in state funding for the state agency.
The total budget for the department under the conference report filed for HB 1909, including federal and other funding, totals $1.6 billion.

A federal judge ruled last year that Mississippi’s Supreme Court districts violated the Voting Rights Act. Instead of redrawing the districts, lawmakers will wait and see what comes of an appeal and a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mississippi lawmakers will not take up redistricting of the state’s Supreme Court districts, choosing instead to wait and see what comes of an appeal as well as how the U.S. Supreme Court rules on a case involving the Voting Rights Act.

The Crusaders came up just short Tuesday evening, dropping a tightly contested 3–2 decision to LSU Alexandria at Milton Wheeler Field.
LSUA capitalized on two Crusader defensive miscues in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Trevor Dooley reached base on a throwing error before Dalton Wilson followed with a single. Lane Kratzer then reached on a second error, allowing Dooley to score an unearned run and give the Generals a 1–0 advantage.

Ornate plants

From overarching arbors and ornate pillars to flowering vine teepees, vertical structures are hallmarks of good garden design. They lift eyes and spirits, provide protection from the sun, and support vines for seasonal color.
Many homes have arbors over patios or out in the yard, complete with swings and even chandeliers. But a lot of new gardeners are opting for a simpler approach by building or buying a cut small one, then expect too much from it.

After a 15-2 start, Southern Miss baseball looked like a team with Omaha-level potential.
Now, as March comes to a close, the Golden Eagles are searching for answers.
What once looked like one of the most complete teams in the country now suddenly looks vulnerable in multiple areas, and after Tuesday night, there is no more ignoring it.
No. 8 Southern Miss dropped an embarrassing 5-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana, falling to 6-6 over its last 12 games.
The shift has been as sudden as it has been jarring.

It’s not a “pretty” dish, but Dirty Spaghetti is a tasty alternative to traditional red sauce pasta.
The month of March is shaping up to be a great one, filled with some of my favorite things: Daylight Savings Time; a few day trips, culminating with a few stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast; new food and treasure finds; spring break courtesy of a school-related job and of course, the advent of spring itself. In no particular order, here are the highlights from a week of exploring, traveling and dining:
