Southern Miss entrance sign getting video and infrastructure upgrades

The electronic message board near the Hardy Street entrance of the University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg is currently undergoing renovations.
The work started on Oct. 5. University officials said the original structure – which dates back to 1998 – was in a state of disrepair and required extensive repair.

Bank donates early learning funds to Lamar

Community Bank has recently made a total of $200,000 in gifts to Early Learning Collaboratives throughout the state of Mississippi, including a $50,000 gift to the program in Lamar County.

Raising Cane’s headed for new home by June

Raising Cane’s in Hattiesburg is moving to a new location.
The restaurant is moving two parking lots west from its current location, 3509 Hardy St., to the lot formerly occupied by Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar. The former Appleebee’s was demolished in late 2020 to make room for the new Raising Cane’s building.

Jolly Jamboree with Cadie Calhoun will benefit Hub City Service Dogs

Brewsky’s is hosting a charity concert, called the Jolly Jamboree, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 17 for Hub City Service Dogs.

Hattiesburg native Cadie Calhoun will be performing for the charity event.

Calhoun was living in Nashville but came back to Hattiesburg during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assistant director of Lamar County library system dies after accident

William “Terry” Lajaunie, the longtime assistant director of the Lamar County Library System, died Dec. 3 at the age of 49.
Lajaunie was severely injured in a car accident on Sept. 14. He was buried in the First Baptist Church of Oloh Cemetery.

Main Squeeze Juice Company opens in District at Midtown

Hattiesburg natives Jeff and Katey Wilson recently opened Main Squeeze Juice Company in the District at Midtown in Hattiesburg.
The juice and smoothie bar was founded in New Orleans in 2016, and the new location is the company’s first in Mississippi.

Scavenger Hunt on display at Pocket Museum

On Dec. 1, the Hattiesburg Pocket Museum, located in the downtown area in a “top-secret” location, unveiled their newest exhibit.
Visitors are challenged to a scavenger hunt, hunting for pop culture and Christmas-related items.
The museum started as a result of COVID-19 closing down the city of Hattiesburg in March.
