Ever on the lookout for stuff I can reuse or recycle from holiday decorations, Christmas is second to none. Even better than composting Halloween pumpkins.
Back when I used to go with fresh-cut trees to decorate, I recycled them after the holidays. Each yielded beautiful evergreen needles perfect for garden mulch, plus a sack of kindling from cut-up branches and small stack of fast-lighting firewood logs.

Winona Christian School senior running back Will Irwin had a final high school football game that most players can only dream about.
One of the top running backs in school history, Irwin capped off his high school career helping his team to an 8-2 mark in 2025. He rushed for more than 1,400 yards and scored more than 20 touchdowns. Irwin and his teammates lost in the semifinals of the Midsouth Association of Independent School’s Class AA to Lee Academy of Clarksdale.

No Lane Kiffin - No Problem - for Ole Miss as they made Magnolia state history by playing in the first College Football Playoff game in our state’s history. The Rebels, ranked sixth in the CFP playoffs, defeated No. 11 Tulane, 41-10, in front of a record-breaking Vaught-Hemingway Stadium crowd of over 68,000. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss ran for two scores and passed for another to lead the Rebels offense. The win was also the first for new Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding.

The Winona High School girls’ and boys’ soccer teams played only one time each last week with games against Riverside High School on Thursday getting rained out.
The Lady Tigers upped their record to 7-3-1 with a 6-2 win over Choctaw County High School Tuesday in Ackerman. Emily Casiday scored a team-high three goals, and Sofia Guzman had two goals. Mary Beth Brannon and Georgina Tyler had one goal each.

The J.Z. George girls brought home a winner’s trophy from the tournament at Eupora High School last Saturday. The J.Z. George girls’ basketball team moved to 9-5 with a 40-27 win over Eupora High School in the Curtis Ford Holiday Classic at Eupora.
The Lady Eagles held a slim 10-7 lead after the first period, but J.Z. George went in front 18-10 at the half with an 11-0 run in the second. Eupora pulled to within five at 27-22 after the third but a 13-5 run by the Lady Jags put the game out of reach.
Kyleigh Sibley led J.Z. George with 15 points, and Dakiya Robinson had seven. Tysalyn Meeks tacked on six points.

● Elbert Andrew Mathis of Winona was arrested on Dec. 17 by the WPD on the charges of possession of a controlled substance, with a bail set in the amount of $5,000, possession of paraphernalia, misdemeanor, improper use of out-of-state tag, misdemeanor, and possession of a controlled substance, with a bail set in the amount of $25,000.

, Greenwood Police are outside of Greenwood Leflore Hospital after four people were shot during an incident in the 300 block of East Market Street on Christmas Eve.
Four people were shot in Greenwood on Christmas Eve, two of them fatally.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said she received a call at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in regard to a shooting incident on the 300 block of East Market Street.
The two people who died from the shooting were Dennis Outlaw, 33, and Hilliard Roby, 28, both of Greenwood. Both men died from multiple gunshot wounds, Sanders said.

Julia Chavez picked up when her phone rings in the middle of the night. This scenario has played out several times, but during this late-night phone call, the person on the other end urgently asked her to translate.
“They’re at the hospital, and you can hear that they’re scared,” said Chavez, the founder and CEO of Columbus-based nonprofit Saving Grace Mission, remembering one of several such calls she has received. “They’re intimidated, and you can hear the frustration from the doctors on the other end.”

Secretary of the Navy John Phelan said he has directed the acquisition of a new frigate class based on HII’s Ingalls-built Legend-class National Security Cutter (NSC), “a proven American built ship.”
The U.S. Navy announced early Friday morning that Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, a division of HII, has been selected to design and build the future small surface combatant ship.

Greenwood police secure the scene at Crestview Apartments after three officers were injured in a shooting there.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Monday night shooting in Greenwood in which three police officers were injured, according to a statement released Tuesday from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
MBI is assessing the incident and gathering evidence and will then share that information with the state Attorney General’s Office, according to the statement.

Whether you’re a regular citizen going about your daily life or the leader of the free world, we all have a duty to turn down the temperature of hatred and division.
There are simply no words sufficient enough to describe the evil that is murder. When a human being takes the life of another human being, something is clearly and deeply broken. And when a family member kills one or more of their own, the horror is compounded to an unimaginable degree.
