“The Agitators: A Reminiscence” is a powerful new work of historical fiction about media influence on local issues. It is written by John Mark Pitner, a Carroll County native.
The narrator, Shadrach Greenwood, is sitting on the courthouse steps in Carrollton, Mississippi, gazing at the town square’s Confederate flag flapping in the breeze. He’s reminiscing about the adventures he had 50 years ago with teen friends Matthew and Penny while the adults around them fought over social issues.

Thursday, Jan. 15 at the regularly scheduled Carroll County School District Board of Education meeting, the Board approved to appoint Thomas Michael Hunt to the recently vacated District 3 seat. Hunt was nominated by sitting District 1 Board Member Kenneth DeLoach. Hunt is a long-time resident of Carroll County who currently has a grandchild and great grandchild attending Marshall Elementary. During his introductory speech and appointment, Hunt expressed his excitement in working with the other Board members, participating in Board decisions, and working to better the school district.

A Christmas service project led by volunteers with Modern Woodmen of America took on a heartfelt meaning this year as multiple chapters came together to support the Baptist Children’s Village in Water Valley an organization that once forever changed the life of one of their own.
Volunteers donated food, essential household supplies, and even a new basketball goal for the children served by the Village. But the project became especially meaningful when Sammy Frank, a longtime member, helped deliver the donations.

Sue Geotes, age 86, of Winona, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Ola Sue was born on April 16, 1939, to Arnold and Inez May of Stewart. Sue graduated from Kilmichael High School and moved to Jackson to attend business college. Alongside her mother, she ran a home-based cake design business for over 20 years. In her 40's, she returned to college and obtained a nursing degree, eventually retiring from Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Although her favorite job was being "Big" to her grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Stewart were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Winona. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Winona. The Rev. B.T. Strum officiated the services.
Visitation was held Sunday, Jan. 18, from 2 p.m. until service time at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Winona.

The Mississippi River is going to change course (avulse) to the Atchafalaya at the Old River Control Complex (ORCC) above Baton Rouge and discharge to the Gulf near Morgan City, LA. Gravity will send it down this shorter, steeper path in a big flood — maybe the next one. Course changes happen about every 1,000 years when the channel clogs up with silt, flow slows, and floods get higher. The last one happened around the 12th century.

The National Football League Playoffs are set as Denver will host New England in the AFC Championship game while Los Angeles will travel to Seattle in the NFC Championship contest. The Winona High School Lady Tigers ran their record to 9-4 overall and 5-0 in Region, Class 3 with a 3-0 win over Choctaw County last Monday and a forfeit victory over Philadelphia High School last Friday.
In the win over Choctaw, Mary Beth Brannon, Sofia Guzman and Emily Casiday scored a goal each.
The Tigers went 1-1 against the same two opponents. Winona beat Choctaw 7-0, as Alejandro White scored three goals and had one assist. Sam Blackwell scored twice, and Gunner Wilkes and Triston Pernell had a goal each. Pernell also had an assist.
