The bonding company acting as guarantor for three former Indianola aldermen has agreed to pay nearly $44,000 owed to the city for a 2023 improper payout to a local contractor.
State Auditor Shad White’s office confirmed to The Enterprise-Tocsin this week that it has received a check from Western Surety Bonding Co. in the amount of $43,600. This payment will make the city whole and will likely end a two-and-a-half-year saga that dominated the final two years of the last board’s term.

The total budget for the department under the conference report filed for HB 1909, including federal and other funding, totals $1.6 billion.

A federal judge ruled last year that Mississippi’s Supreme Court districts violated the Voting Rights Act. Instead of redrawing the districts, lawmakers will wait and see what comes of an appeal and a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Winona High School girls fast-pitch softball team looked to snap a five-game losing skid, as the Lady Tigers opened Region 4-3A play Tuesday at Nettleton High School.
The two teams will collide at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Winona.
Winona (7-5) played two games last week against Vardaman High School. The Lady Rams claimed a 6-3 win Tuesday and beat the Lady Tigers 14-1 on Thursday.
In Tuesday’s game, Vardaman plated one run each in the first and sixth innings and two runs each in the third and fifth frames. Winona scored one run in the first and two in the fifth.

The Winona High School baseball team only played one game last week, as the Tigers dropped a 19-9 decision at Carroll Academy Thursday night.
Carroll plated eight runs in the first, two runs each in the second and fourth frames, four in the third and three in the fifth. The Tigers scored four runs in the third and five in the fourth.
Jake Pearson (1-3) took the loss on the mound, as he only recorded two outs, allowing eight runs (all earned) on five hits, walking three.

The Winona High tennis team picked up two Region 2-3A wins on the courts last week.
The Tigers defeated Amanda Elzy 6-1 Thursday in Greenwood. In girls singles, Joceline Rodriguez claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win, and in boys singles, Leo Guzman earned a 6-2, 6-1 win.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Marlee Wilkes and Eden Leech won their match 6-0, 6-0, and in No. 2 girls doubles, Ianna Guess and Ahmiyah Hicks won by forfeit over Elzy.

The Jaguars of J.Z. George got off to a rousing start in Region 3-2A play with a doubleheader sweep of Charleston High School last Thursday in North Carrollton at the Carroll County Recreation Park.
J.Z. George won the first game 12-11, holding off a seventh-inning rally by the Tigers to get the win.
Charleston, which trailed 12-4 through six innings, scored seven runs in the top of the final frame.

Filming equipment for “Southern Dish” points toward the series’ host, Lydia Chassaniol of Winona.
For well over a year, state Sen. Lydia Chassaniol of Winona and a Mississippi Public Broadcasting film crew have been crisscrossing the state with a delectable purpose.
That is to create a new TV series that will engage the state’s would-be visitors and its residents by introducing them to restaurants and their chefs statewide in order to tell Mississippi’s story through their food.
The result is MPB’s new series, “Southern Dish.” Chassaniol, had the idea for the series, raised the money to fund it and serves as its host.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Marshal Service that occurred Monday morning at a residence on Mill Street in Indianola.
According to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton, the deceased has been identified as Demetric Bryant, 25, of Indianola. Burton said that his body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.
