Cheryll Martin, Hattiesburg High School class of 1974 graduate, was the first female student in the school to take mechanical drawing. Decades later, after building a graphic design company from the ground up, her work has shaped some of the nation’s most recognizable brands.
Cheryll Martin, a freelance graphic designer and owner of CM Design, Dallas, came to Hattiesburg from Little Rock, Ark. when her stepfather, Paul C. Rawlings, took a position as a judge in the Hub City. When she saw that HHS offered a mechanical drawing class, she jumped at the opportunity. Little did she know, she was the first female student to take the course.

The Pearl River men's basketball team extended a pair of impressive streaks Monday night inside Marvin R. White Coliseum, earning its 16th consecutive conference-opening victory and 14th straight win over East Central with a 90-62 decision.
The last time Pearl River fell to the Warriors came Feb. 17, 2017 — just over 3,200 days ago.
"We looked a lot better tonight — we were healthier," head coach Chris Oney said. "Moving forward, we can be more lethal coming out with four guards and playing around different guys.

The Tate County Board of Supervisors and the Tate County Economic Development Foundation have announced the hiring of Joe Max Higgins to fill the vacancy in the community’s community’s economic and industrial development organization.
The announcement was made Monday night following a meeting of the EDF Board and community stakeholders.

Former assistant chief of Hattiesburg Fire Department, Chris Carr, takes the podium at a Monday morning press conference to announce his appointment as chief.
Chief Sherrocko Stewart of Hattiesburg Fire Department, who served as chief of the department since 2018, retired on Dec. 31, 2025. Under his leadership, the department improved the city’s fire rating from a Class 4 to a Class 3, saving homeowners on their insurance rates and improving the safety of the community. Stewart also oversaw the construction of Station 9 and major renovations at stations 1, 5 and 7.

The city council unanimously votes at Tuesday evening’s meeting.
The Hattiesburg City Council was presented with a draft of standard operational procedures and guidelines for the city’s Code Enforcement division during Monday’s work session of the city council. While the division has followed the state statutes and guidelines, Wiley Quinn, the director of Urban Development, seeks to further clarify a standard operating procedure. The proposed 19-page draft was submitted to the city council for their inspection and input and will be worked toward completion in the coming months.
