The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated is one of those days that, for those who were alive then, can remember precisely where we were when the news broke on Nov. 22, 1963. Where were you? I was only a 7-year-old tyke, sitting in my third-grade classroom at Hattiesburg’s historic Eureka Elementary School. My teacher’s name was Della Ruth Jones and, that’s right, she was my mother. But I had to address her as “Mrs. Jones” in the classroom.

I’m not sure what I can add to this conversation that hasn’t already been said about the new School Choice legislation introduced this session. What I can offer is the perspective of a proud public-school graduate, raised by two public-school teachers, now raising a proud fourth grader at Woodley Elementary. My husband is also a product of public schools, and we credit that experience with much of the success we enjoy today.

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — William Carey University rode a red-hot offensive start and a composed final-minute finish to earn an 87–84 victory over Thomas University on Thursday evening, with the Crusaders delivering key plays on both ends of the floor to hold off a furious late rally.
"This was just another tough game in the SSAC," said Assistant Coach Phillip McCray. "Thomas was well prepared for this game. They threw some stuff at us defensively to try to keep us out of a rhythm and they were also ready for what we threw at them.

MOORHEAD, Miss. — The Pearl River women's basketball team delivered one of its most complete offensive performances of the 2025-26 season Thursday night, rolling past Mississippi Delta 79-52.
"After the last game, we got together as coaches and decided we needed to do something different offensively," head coach Shanae Govan-Williams said. "We realized a lot of the shots we were missing were makeable. We talked to the girls about not getting sped up and trusting themselves. I think we did a great job of getting to our spots and knocking down open shots."

Many Mississippians face healthcare uncertainty
As Mississippi stares down the barrel of significant federal funding reductions and cuts to Medicaid and Medicare as a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), access to healthcare coverage is uncertain for a significant portion of the state’s population. The OBBBA passed the Senate on July 1, 2025, and the House of Representatives on July 3 before being passed to and signed by President Donald Trump on July 4.

Those of us of a certain age and background can remember, about 1966, waking up in or around Saigon to the melodious tones of Adrian Cronauer as he daily exclaimed over the radio, “Good Morning, Vietnam!” Much later, the comedian, Robin Williams, popularized the expression in a movie loosely based on the disc-jockey’s life and experiences.

President Trump is a master at keeping attention on himself, but when he goes too far he exposes himself to criticism.
Sometimes this is well deserved. A good example is the recent news that his Justice Department has issued subpoenas to leaders of the Federal Reserve over Senate testimony about the $2.5 billion cost of renovating the central bank’s 90-year-old building in Washington.

Owner Bob Crechale passed away on Christmas Eve. The family restaurant will be closing its doors for the final time on February 15.
Some places stand the test of time quietly and consistently. That’s the case with Crechale’s restaurant on Highway 80 in Jackson. When I was growing up in Jackson, it was one of many locally owned eateries that my family frequented. We ate at Primos, the Mayflower, the Elite, LeFleur’s, the Green Derby, the Rotisserie, Dennery’s, and Crechale’s. And while it wasn’t fancy, Crechele’s was always one of my favorites.
