POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The No. 2 Pearl River baseball team survived a late No. 19 Gulf Coast State surge on Saturday at Dub Herring Park, shutting the door to secure an 8-7 victory and a series victory.
“We battled all weekend and they’re (Gulf Coast State) really, really good,” PRCC head coach said. “They’re as physical of an offense as we’ve seen. The bottom line is we won the series, and that was the goal coming into the weekend. Any time you take two out of three against a team like that, it’s a really good weekend.”

Southern Miss evened its weekend series with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park, using a late two-run home run from Joey Urban and five scoreless innings from its bullpen to secure an 8-6 victory.
“I thought our guys competed hard,” Southern Miss head coach Christian Ostrander said. “Really good arm on the mound again. We knew it was going to be a fight coming into it. They got the lead and it didn’t look good, but our guys kept competing and we were able to put some things together.”

Two former law enforcement officers pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges tied to a federal crackdown on drug trafficking in the Mississippi Delta
Former Humphreys County deputy Dequarian Smith, 29, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges for conspiring to protect a transport of illegal drugs through portions of the Mississippi Delta between August and September of 2022. Camp Shelby hosted a change of command ceremony on last Friday morning to celebrate the passing of the torch of leadership from Colonel Lee Henry, the thirty seventh commander, to Colonel Ashley Sullivan. Henry was the first Perry County native to lead Camp Shelby, 70% of which lies in Perry County. Sullivan is the first aviation commander of the base and looks forward to many years of building onto the strong foundation Henry and those who came before him laid.
