Photos submitted by Thomas Turner / Thomas Turner lost his mother, Mary Elizabeth Turner (inset) just a few months shy of his high school graduation. Years later, Turner started writing about the loss as a way to help his younger half-sister through the loss of her own mother, Turner’s step-mother. His story “Holding the Door” is included in the 25th Anniversary Edition of Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul.
