The MAIS Athletics and Activities Association Commission officially canceled all spring sports and championship events for the 2019-2020 year.
“The intention was for them to wait and see what options would be possible and if and when the state might loosen things up and open up,” PCS Athletic Director Rob Shillito said. “Ultimately, they determined that if we kept things waiting and pushing things back that spring, that it would inadvertently affect things that would be going on in the summer that those athletes would be starting in June or July. They eventually decided it was best to call it, as difficult of a decision it is.”
As of now, the MAIS has not set a date for athletes and coaches to return to campus. The only information given was that as long as local order permits, teams may practice, scrimmage and compete against each other under the MAIS’ standard summer guidelines.
“The reality is that we are going to wait and see,” Shillito said. “We have some potential ideas of what it would like. Some sports are easier than others to maintain social distance. But they haven’t given us any information as far as when that could happen.”
As of now, Shillito has had his coaches develop various plans for different scenarios as to when athletes can return to condition and practice.
“I have had my coaches put together four different plans to where if we can open up June 1, then all of our coaches have a plan for what that would like,” Shillito said. “If we can open up June 15, July 1 or July 15 because I don’t want to reactionary if things open up. I want to be ready roll and have it thought through on what it would look like.”
