Southern Miss’ Austen Izzio entered the transfer portal after one season.
The infielder played various spots in his brief career at USM. The Pearl River Community College transfer held a .211 batting average in eight appearances and four starts.
At PRCC, Izzio hit .332, 10 home runs and drove in 46 runs in his freshman season.
“It was his decision,” Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry said. “He felt that it was his best interest to look at other options.”
Also not returning for the 2021 season is senior right-handed relief pitcher Alex Nelms.
The Gulfport product, who was accepted into medical school, is the first of the 2020 senior class to confirm the decision of not returning despite having option of being able to return for an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his career, Nelms held a 5.63 earned run average and recorded 56 strikeouts in 40 appearances and three starts.
