Local products help JCJC sweep Itawamba


FULTON – The 12th-rated Jones County Junior College Bobcats swept a doubleheader from No. 11 Itawamba here Sunday afternoon at Roy Cresap Field.

In game one, starter Will Hicks (Germantown) and relievers Payton Harris (Oak Grove) and Bryce Fagan (Petal) combined on a two-hitter as JCJC beat the Indians, 6-2. In game two, Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and lead JCJC to a 3-1 victory.

The Bobcats, 23-7 overall and 10-4 in the MACJC, travel to Copiah-Lincoln for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.

Itawamba, 20-8 and 6-6, goes to Northwest on Tuesday.

Bobcats 6, Indians 2

The game was scoreless until JCJC broke through with five runs in the third inning.

Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) reached on a bunt single. Trace Henry (Mooreville) then tripled to center to make it 2-0.

With one out, Luther Woullard (D’Iberville) singled a run home. Woullard would then steal second and third and would score on a Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) single. Hale would steal second and score on a single by Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School).

ICC made it 5-2 in the fourth.

Drew Thomas led off with a single and Justin Medlin reached on a fielder’s choice. Hunter Nabors drew a walk. With two outs, Drake Wallace reached on an error, which allowed two runs to score.

Woullard then hit a solo home run in the sixth to close the scoring.

Hicks, making his first start of the season, got the win. He went five innings, allowed two runs (none earned), two hits, walked none and struck out four. He is now 1-2 on the year. Harris pitched two innings and did not allow a hit and Fagan pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and getting a strikeout.

Woullard homered and singled for JCJC. Henry tripled and Hale, Hudson and Brune added singles.

Connor Lewis and Thomas singled for ICC’s only hits.

Medlin, the starter, pitched 2.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed five runs, five hits, walked one and struck out four. Sam Harrington pitched the final 6.1 innings, allowed one run, one hit, walked two and struck out three.

Bobcats 3, Indians 1

With one out in the top of the seventh, Hale drew a walk and Hudson Harris (West Jones) doubled to center. Matthews then lined a double to left to score Hale and pinch-runner Jacob Vick (East Central) and give Jones the lead.

Medlin singled to start the bottom of the seventh.

But Brune got a groundout and a double play to end the game.

JCJC had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Robbie Woody (Madison Central) walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a single by Woullard.

ICC tied it in the second when Hayden Palmer led off with a home run.

Starter Jay Simpson (Presbyterian Christian School) went 5.1 innings, allowed one run, six hits, walked one and struck out three. Brune, 7-0, pitched the final 1.2 innings and got the win. He gave up no runs, one hit and struck out one.

Harris doubled and singled for the Bobcats. Matthews doubled with Henry, Woody and Woullard adding singles.

Houston Harding went the distance for ICC and took the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned), six hits, walked three and struck out five.

Nabors doubled and singled and Jacob Hall had two singles for ICC. Palmer homered with Lewis and Medlin adding singles.
