A native of Laurel, Hearn graduated from Laurel’s former George S. Gardiner High School in 1962, where he was a member of its undefeated 1961 Big 8 Conference champion football team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1966 and a master’s degree in public relations in 1987, both from the University of Southern Mississippi. Before joining the USM University Relations staff as news director in 1984, he worked at Mississippi newspapers as a reporter and editor, including at the Meridian Star, Hattiesburg American, Clarion Ledger and the Greenwood Commonwealth, as well as with the former United Press International bureau in Jackson. Hearn served his state and country for 20 years as a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve, earning the ranks of first sergeant and first lieutenant. He was awarded the Mississippi Army National Guard’s Magnolia Medal, which honors Mississippi National Guard members for exceptional service or accomplishments; the Army Commendation Medal; and the Department of Defense’s Thomas Jefferson Award for feature writing in his work as a military public affairs officer.
In 2004, University Press of Mississippi published Hearn’s book Hurricane Camille: Monster Storm of the Gulf Coast. His writing has also been featured in Army Reserve magazine and Vietnam Magazine, among other publications.
