The public is invited to attend the Hattiesburg Arts Council’s “Put Me in the Mix,” a live music competition for aspiring young musicians, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center.
The event is funded in part by a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.
“Put Me in the Mix” is a music mentoring and recording opportunity for Forrest and Lamar County teenagers ages 13-19. Performers have been gathering for weekly practice sessions, along with team-building and music marketing workshops since October.
The workshops have been led by local music professionals, including Colin Cameron, Joshua Holt, David Pellow, Reggie Chapman and Abigail Allen.
Staff members of the University of Southern Missisippi School of Communication, including instructor Jeffrey Rassier and WUSM Radio general manager Justin Martin, also introduced participants to audio production, marketing and copyright.
The winner of the competition will be chosen for a multi-track recording session at the USM Media and Entertainment Arts Studio. Their music will also be played on WUSM.
The competition is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a reception and announcement of the four outstanding groups or soloist award winners.
