Two Lamar County bridges to receive weight limit hikes

By HASKEL BURNS,

Two Lamar County bridges with posted weight limits are being temporarily shut down this week while engineers replace concrete decking to raise the weight limits on each bridge.

On Tuesday, Purvis To Columbia Road between Levi Bryant Road and Bay Creek Road was closed, followed by the closure Wednesday of Purvis To Columbia Road between Bay Creek Road and Roseberry Road. The shutdowns should only last a couple of days, as officials hope to have work completed by the end of the week.

“This project has been planned for some time,” Lamar County Administrator Jody Waits said. “We just had to order some materials and pick the right time to do it.”

In particular, work will entail the replacement of some damaged precast slab units with new precast units at each bridge.

“Once complete, there will be no posting on either bridge,” County Engineer Don Walker said.

Initial work will start on the bridge over Hurricane Creek, which was built in 1989. According to the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction, that bridge is posted at 15 tons for H Truck, 28 tons for HS Long and 24 tons for HS Short. The average daily traffic count of the bridge is 750.

The second bridge, which runs over Big Bay Creek, also was built in 1989. The bridge is posted at 24 tons for H Truck and 36 tons for HS Short and has an average daily traffic county of 570.

Last week, officials posted the closures on Facebook and apologized for any inconvenience caused to residents.

“Please be patient with our road crew while they work to make the road safer for motorists,” the post reads.
