Teachers in the Forrest County School District will receive an increased supplement from the district next year following approval of the measure by the district’s Board of Directors March 9.
Teachers will be awarded $2,500 in the 2020-2021 school year, an increase from the $2,000 supplement they received for the current year. The supplement is divided in two, with the first half provided in December and the second in May.
FCSD Superintendent Brian Freeman said the supplement is not classified as a bonus, but rather an incentive the district provides to recruit and retain teachers. “We really appreciate what they do, and if we can find a way to increase it (supplement) in the future, we will,” he said.
It was also announced by the board that the district had earned recognition for academic achievement by both the Mississippi School Board Association and PREPS (Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools), earning the Lantern Award from the MSBA and recognition of above average performance by PREPS in Algebra, English, U.S. History, Biology, and ACT Preparation.
PREPS is currently headquartered at William Carey University in Hattiesburg.
In other board matters, Freeman swore in School Resource Officer Wesley Harris, who will be assigned to Earl Travillion Attendance Center.
Harris has previous experience providing security at the Rawls Springs School campus.
Freeman also noted that the district’s SRO force now has four new Dodge Durangos, giving it vehicles for use at all FCSD campuses.
