A woman was injured after her car was struck by an Amtrak train at the intersection of Chappell Hill Road and U.S. 11 near Targa Resources in Petal.
Matthew Hiatt, Chief of the Petal Police Department, said the incident occurred at approximately noon on October 30. The woman’s car was destroyed and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“She’s going to be okay; there were no life-threatening injuries,” Hiatt said. “She’s an extremely lucky individual.
“Usually when you’ve got a vehicle versus train, the train usually wins. But she’s going to be okay; she’s going make a full recovery.”
Hiatt said according to witnesses, the crossguard was down and over the train tracks at the time of the accident. However, the woman attempted to drive around the barrier, resulting in the collision with the train.
“Our investigation is continuing on that,” Hiatt said. “But it’s never a good idea to (attempt to circumvent the crossguard).”
Petal Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Petal Fire Department and AAA Ambulance.
