To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and to join a movement of inclusion, the Hattiesburg Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K has issued race bib #321 to Kerry-Camille Helveston, a Hattiesburg resident and client of The Arc of Southeast Mississippi. She’ll wear it in the race on Saturday, April 1, 2023.
This initiative, established by Adidas, is working to make sure that race events reserve a spot for runners with Down syndrome, encouraging representation in mainstream sports and shaping a more inclusive future for running.
“Kerry-Camille is very excited about this opportunity,” said Kerry Love Davis. “She loves her family and friends at the Arc and will tell you she has just ‘a little Down syndrome!’”
Helveston has been an active part of the Hattiesburg Half-Marathon since it began in 2012. The Arc was the first beneficiary of the road race and she happily cheered on runners as they ran across the finish line. This year, she’ll wear Bib #321 as she participates in the race and others cheer her on as she crosses the finish line.
The number 321 refers to Trisomy 21 (tri-21) – the medical identifier for Down Syndrome. Consequently, this is an important number within the Down Syndrome community and the reason behind World Down Syndrome Day (03/21).
“Participating in this initiative means a lot to us,” said Michael Dixon, race steering committee member. “Several of our race beneficiaries serve clients with Down syndrome and it makes the most sense for us to help raise the banner of awareness around the initiative’s mission of inclusion.”
The Hattiesburg Half Marathon · 10K · 5K is a community-led event with numerous local agencies planning the race, including Volunteer Southeast Mississippi at the United Way and the Pinebelt Foundation.
