SCAM: Hattiesburgers should be on alert for an ongoing phone scam. The Hattiesburg Police report that individuals are attempting to solicit money from unsuspecting victims by posing as police officers calling to collect unpaid fines.
The caller will reportedly claim to be an officer, like “Detective Sergeant Mike Harper,” and state that the person receiving the call needs to submit a handwriting sample, has a missed court appearance or an unpaid fine. The caller will then threaten arrest if the person does not provide payment information over the phone, typically Greendot cards.
“THIS IS A SCAM!” emphasized a recent report from the Hattiesburg Police Department. “Remember, never give anyone your personal or banking information over the phone. Do not ever purchase money cards and read the numbers to an individual over the phone for a means of payment.”
