Oak Grove High School and Pearl River CC alum Darrell Luter Jr. was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City with the 155th overall pick.
The defensive back spent the last three years at South Alabama and is also the first Jarguar defensive player selected in the draft. Luter, a participant in the 2023 NFL Draft Combine and Reese's Senior Bowl finished his career with 91 total tackles in two years. He also recorded five interceptions (four in 2021) and 18 pass breakups.
He finished his senior season as a Third-Team All-Sun Belt performer, totaling 37 tackles including 25 solo tackles. He also recorded an interception and five pass breakups playing the boundary corner position. Luter was named to several preseason watch lists including the Jim Thorpe Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, and the Bednarik Award.
Following his junior season, Luter was named a Second Team All-American by PFF, and an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele Publications and Pro Football Network. He was also ranked 24th on PFF's College 101 List.
At Pearl River CC, Luter as rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com junior-college recruit and was selected second-team all-Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges following his sophomore season at PRCC after posting 19 tackles, an interception and a team-high eight passes broken up.
At Oak Grove, Lettered three years in football, two in basketball and one in track for the Warriors. In his senior year of high school, he was credited with 37 tackles, three passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
