Southern Miss cornerback Eric Scott, Jr. was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round (178) of the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday.
The Butler Community College transfer posted a career-high 27 tackles during his senior season while appearing in 12 games. He had a season-high four tackles against both Miami and Tulane last season, while having two tackles for a loss to his name.
Scott posted 78 total tackles (51 solos) with two tackles for loss for 18 yards, 12 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and five interceptions in 34 career games over the last three seasons. Both of his interceptions in 2022 were returned for touchdowns including a 22-yard pick against Liberty and a 35-yard scoring return against nationally ranked Tulane in a win over the Green Wave.
This is the first time a Southern Miss player has been drafted since Quez Watkins went to the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Scott is the first player drafted under head coach Will Hall.
Scott is the first defensive player to be drafted since Tarvarius Moore (San Francisco) and Cornell Armstrong (Miami) went in the 2018 NFL Draft.
