JACKSON, Tenn. – William Carey baseball claimed the SSAC tournament championship with a 15-4 run-rule victory over Blue Mountain Christian on Saturday at Rockabillys Stadium.
Carey took an early 1-0 lead on a sac fly by Caleb Laird in the second inning but the Toppers answered in the third inning with four runs on three hits. WCU got within one run with a run in the bottom of the third on a sac fly by Jake Lycette followed by Kris Jones driving in another run in the fourth inning.
The Crusader offense came to life in the fifth, as Bailee Hendon drove in two runs with a single to right field. Braydon Coffey followed with an RBI double to give Carey a 6-4 lead. WCU added two more runs in the inning on sac flies by Billy Garrity and Laird.
Carey extended its lead to 9-4 after scoring a run in the sixth. Then in the seventh inning the Crusaders finished things off with six runs on four hits highlighted by a grand slam from Lycette for the run-rule victory.
Next up for Carey is the opening round of the NAIA Baseball Championship being held May 13-16 at Milton Wheeler Field.
