Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie, announced on Tuesday that as part of a “refocusing” effort, the company plans to transition ownership of or close 32 Winn-Dixie locations across the Southeast before the end of the year- including the Hattiesburg location.
“For a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home,” said Anthony Hucker, chairman and CEO of Southeastern Grocers. “As we enter our next century as The Winn-Dixie Company — a brand-new 100-year-old company — we are accelerating growth where our roots run deepest while staying true to our purpose of feeding and enriching the communities, families and neighbors who have supported us for generations.”
Locations in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana now face uncertainty. Piggly Wiggly, Food City and Super 1 Foods announced plans to operate some of the locations in Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana, but that only covers seven of the 32 locations on the chopping block.
