Saturday, USM’s sculpture program fired up the furnaces for their annual iron pour event. Open to the public each year, participants paid $15 for a sand block, carved in their designs and were able to learn more about the process before going home with their permanent piece of art.
Jennifer Torres, sculpture professor at the university, said, “[This event is] Always a big hit. Many folks from around Hattiesburg, local schools and students from other states comes to make art, hear lectures and work with visiting artists.”
This year’s visiting artist was Hugh Patton, an established metal sculptor in Birmingham, who also gave a lecture that was open to the public on Thursday, Nov. 14. Patton and Torres both worked directly with the students executing the pours and used the experience to demonstrate the process the students newer to the program.
