Two Hattiesburg teenagers are behind bars after breaking into a home that – unbeknownst to them – belongs to a deputy from the Stone County Sheriff’s Department.
Officials from the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office said on July 23, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old stole a vehicle and began driving down U.S. 49, where the automobile broke down in south Forrest County.
After setting out on foot, the teenagers broke into the Stone County deputy’s residence, where he was inside at the time. Upon being confronted by the deputy, the teenagers attempted to flee the scene.
The deputy managed to detain one of the teenagers, but the other one managed to run away and fire a shot from firearm at the deputy. The deputy did was not hit and did not return fire.
At around the same time, Forrest County Constable Tommy Cook, who was driving north of U.S. 49, stopped at the scene of the deputy’s house. He then reported seeing the second teenager walking south on U.S. 49 a short distance away.
That teenager was then taken into custody without incident, and officers recovered a firearm from him.
The two teenagers – whose identities have not been released – are being held in the Forrest County Adult Detention Center and are currently charged with home invasion of an occupied dwelling. The abandoned vehicle is being processed to determine if the juveniles are associated with it.
