Tom Franklin was born and raised in Dickinson, AL, not far away from the home of Harper Lee. However, his writing has more in common with Mississippi writers like Larry Brown and Ellen Douglas. As a boy (much like Larry Ott in his novel "Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter,") Franklin was not very mechanically inclined.
