In 1689, the Florida community of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose was the first place to grant asylum to Africans transported to the United States. King Charles II of Spain decreed as long as they converted to Catholicism, served four years in the militia, and were baptized with a Christian name, they would be recognized as free.
