As a precocious child, Flannery O'Connor showed signs of brilliance, especially in her cartooning and writing. A self-described "pigeon-toed child with a receding chin and a you-leave-me-alone-or-I'll-bite-you complex," O'Connor changed following the death of her father in 1941.
