Following the death of the sheriff of Lamar County, P.E. Lott in June 1948, it was announced in the Hattiesburg American on June 26, 1948 that his widow, Mrs. P.E. “Louie” Lott, would serve in his place until an election for his replacement could be held. This made Lott the first female to serve as sheriff of Lamar County.
