The Hattiesburg Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend historic landmark status for Alpine Snow, an iconic staple of Hattiesburg summer memories. With the recommendation from the Planning Commission, the matter will now be submitted to the city council for final approval.
Founded in 1962 by Evelyn Moore, the business originally had five locations, including one in Petal. The business was then sold to "The Snowball King," Jim Baker, in 1970. Finally, the business was purchased in the early 1990's by the current proprietor, Mike Phillips.
"So many memories have been made here over the years," said Phillips. "People love snow balls, and the people of Hattiesburg love snow balls from that snow ball stand. What we want to do is for people to come and have a wonderful experience. We want to take care of them and be friendly. When people come to get a snow ball, they're in a good mood because they're coming to get a treat. They've been working hard all day or they've been out in the heat. We just want to make them happy and provide them with a great experience."
