Members of the Commiskey-Wheat Detachment of the Marine Corps League will be collecting supplies to benefit the town of Burnsville, NC. Burnsville, a town 40 minutes north of Asheville, was hit hard by Hurricane Helene. Over three days of
constant rainfall, flooding and mudslides caused devastation to homes, vehicles, and businesses.
The supply drive will be held at the Marine Corps League building at 660 Weathersby Road, behind Lowes, on Wednesday, October 9 till Friday, October 11 from 3-6 pm.
The league requests the following items be donated to assist with clean-up efforts: blue plastic tarps, rolled plastic, hand tools, heavy-duty plastic bags, work gloves, cleaning rags, detergent, disinfectant, mops, brooms, plastic buckets, scrub brushes, dust masks, shovels, and rakes. They will also accept non-perishable food items like canned or dried goods and personal care
items including toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair brushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. Baby items such as diapers, formula, and baby wipes will be received as well along with feminine hygiene products.
“In 2005, when South Mississippi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, I will never forget how our neighbors sent supplies that helped us get through that hard time," said league member, Clifton Addison. "Our neighbors in the Appalachian region need us now and we are going to show up and help them.”
The VFW Post 3036 of Hattiesburg will also be hosting a food drive on Saturday, October 12. The two organizations plan to merge their items and take all that is collected to Burnsville on Sunday, October 13.
