The Hattiesburg Zoo will host a STEAM Day on Saturday, June 21st from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The term STEM was first used by Dr. Judith Ramaley, in 2001, while she served as the assistant director of human resources and education at the National Science Foundation. Aiming to improve the existing curriculum for science, technology, engineering, and math at the time, Ramaley introduced the now ubiquitous idea that these four pillars had inherently overlapping and compatible qualities. Because of these overlaps, she argued that students would benefit by learning them in tandem.
“Here at the Hattiesburg Zoo, we wanted to put a twist on STEM, and add the Arts for a STEAM day,” said Jeremy Cumpton, Director of Conservation and Education. “From medical technology and nutrition to constructing new buildings and guest experiences, STEM is ingrained into our daily routines, but we also use artistic components when we are creating enrichment for our animals.” Cumpton continued, “Adding the “A” to STEM (STEAM) gives a more complete picture of what it takes to care for our animals and educate our guests about all aspects of our natural world.”
According to the Association for Zoos and Aquariums – “The public at large place a high value on the role of zoos and aquariums in teaching children about the natural world, respect for living creatures, as a place for parents and children to discover new things together, and as an educational resource for children in the community. Research shows that parents in particular place value on zoos and aquariums as unique venues for informal learning. In fact zoos and aquariums have become settings where research on approaches to facilitating Science Technology, Engineering and Math learning is thriving.”
On June 21st, adults and children alike will have the opportunity to participate in STEAM learning and experiences while visiting the Hattiesburg Zoo. “Students often wonder how they will use their STEAM education in the ‘real world’, and we are proud to be able to show the practical side of that learning,” said Cumpton.
Participation in STEAM activities at the Hattiesburg Zoo is included with zoo admission and annual passes do apply.
