Have you ever had that experience when you say “I cannot get sick right now!” but then it happens anyway?
Well I had that problem hit me on Sunday as I had to miss the Southern Miss baseball game.
See, the problem for me is that I really do like going to work. Plus, the workaholic side of me hates being behind on things, but that’s a story for another day. Missing work for me is the equivalent of being a little kid who is sick. When you’re sick as a kid, you miss out on all the play fun. I basically have the same issue.
The irony is that I thought I was finally going to be able to relax and enjoy the baseball and softball seasons now that basketball is over. Boy, was I wrong.
As I lay in bed battling a 100-degree fever all day Sunday, all I kept thinking about is how horrible it would be if I was bedridden for the week, because there is a lot of excitement happening in both the baseball and softball worlds. A quick word of friendly advice, never say “I cannot get sick right now” because you’ll just put the jinx on yourself.
For starters, Oak Grove and Petal baseball will be going at it this week. It’s a series that I look forward to all year and one that you cannot miss under any circumstances. Entering the series, each team has one loss on the year. I expect to see a little bit of everything that baseball can bring, which is phenomenal pitching, big hits and crazy twists that people will talk about until next season. This is just to shed the light on my problem.
But Petal and Oak Grove is just the start. Southern Miss and Mississippi State softball is another fun rivalry happening this week. Southern Miss (14-7) will host the No. 24 Bulldogs (24-3) in what should be a fun one to watch. The in-state rivals both feature high powered offenses with MSU posting a .325 batting average while the Golden Eagles have a .294 average.
Lastly, Southern Miss baseball starts conference play against Florida International. FIU has always played the Golden Eagles tough. The Panthers enter the weekend with team batting average of .304 and the preseason conference pitcher of the year. It should make for an interesting weekend that’s not to be missed. You can read more about that in the weekend preview.
To add context, my dad will be making a special trip from New Orleans to come watch the Warriors and Panthers play for the first time ever. My dad, a diehard Tulane fan, is missing out on a top 25 matchup between Tulane and Long Beach State this weekend just to make the Petal and Oak Grove game. Then he’ll be catching the USM game on Saturday.
Who would want to be out sick for any of these games?
