The Mississippi Thunder 16U travel fast-pitch softball team recently competed in the USSSA National Championship in Foley, Alabama. The Hattiesburg based team went 8-0 while competing against teams from Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia and Louisiana.
The Mississippi Thunder are coached by Benjy Hornsby, Corey Papp and Heather Hill with players from seven area high schools.
The Mississippi Thunder outscored their opponents 51-6 to win the USSSA 16U National Title.
Oak Grove High School’s Ryanne Hornsby was named the tournament MVP, and Sumrall High School’s Lilli Roberson earned offensive MVP.
“While I am very proud of Ryanne and Lilli for their well-deserved individual awards, this accomplishment was a total team effort,” Co-head coach Corey Papp said. “Every one of our 11 players contributed to our USSSA National Championship. Our girls have been working hard all summer practicing and competing in tournaments in preparation for Nationals. It’s been an honor to coach such a great group of young ladies.”
