“We respect all, but we fear none,” is the slogan used by the Lady Eagles basketball team. This mentality has created a style of basketball that resonates throughout the campus and respected by opponents.
Coach Otto Crawford is in his third year as head coach and has established a basketball tradition during his time at the helm of the Lady Eagles. Crawford has a 37-20 record the past two years and has reached the playoffs in both years, with a state championship appearance in the 2017-’18 season.
The Lady Eagles look to carry that message and style of play this season. Sitting at 8-4 on the year, Crawford fully believes this team can do it.
Having success out of the gate does add pressure from year to year, but the coach is ready for that challenge, with the help of a talented roster.
“We have done a great job here at North Forrest,” Crawford said. “We have been district champs the past two years. People expect that from us now and we are excited to show them what we can do this year.”
Crawford looks to Amirah Stubbs to be the leader on the court in all areas. The junior shooting guard can play in all positions and is a force on the defensive side. She is averaging 8.6 points per game for the Lady Eagles and is also a track star.
“Amirah Stubbs is one of our best overall players,” Crawford said. “She plays both sides of the ball really well and can play well without the ball. With her being a track star, this facet of her game allows her to play at a fast pace. Her endurance is also amongst the best there is. She has came a long way in three years and we expect big things from her this year.”
Mohogany Mcnulty lead the way with 10 points a game and can shoot the three ball as well as driving in and creating opportunities.
“Mohogany is one of the best shooters we have had. Sequaia Bolton is also a great shooter. Both girls have high basketball IQ and are heavily relied on during the game.”
Another couple of key players is a transfer from Petal, Myranda Myers and Sequoia Bolten. Their intensity and desire to be good stands out amongst the rest. Doing the dirty work and cleaning up the board’s sets the tone for this Lady Eagle squad.
“Myers is our energy of the team,” Crawford said. “She gets the tempo going for us. She is a great defensive rebounder. Bolten also brings a lot of energy. She takes the job of wanting to guard the best player on their team. She came in late and came to me and told me she wants to do anything possible to help the team out. They are both great parts to our team.”
One of the best parts of this team is the amount of players that will see the court. The Lady Eagles will play anywhere from 8-12 players throughout the game, so coach Crawford will be able to keep his team fresh for the most part.
The Eagles look to keep their three-peat alive as district champs. The Lady Eagles have not lost a district game in two straight years.
