HATTIESBURG – No. 8 William Carey softball showed no effects of a 10-day layoff as it swept Mississippi University for Women in non-conference action at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
In Game 1, Carey (5-1) put the game away in the second inning as it rolled to a 7-3 win.
The Lady Crusaders stranded a pair of runners in the first inning but in the second inning, they capitalized on their opportunities. Macy Monk (Jr./Denham Springs, La.) and Kimberly Gilbert (Sr/Saucier) scored the first WCU runs of the game off a dropped fly ball by the Owls then Harli Crow (Jr./Denham Springs, La.) busted the game wide open with a bases-loaded clearing triple to put Carey up 5-0. Kaitlyn Thompson (Jr./Denham Springs, La.) followed with an RBI to score Crow to cap the six-run inning by WCU.
Carey added the final run of the game on an RBI sacrifice fly by Mary Blair Odom (So./Madison, Miss.) in the fifth inning.
Hannah Moak (Sr./Ruth, Miss.) picked up the win for WCU as she allowed one run and three hits in six innings of work.
In Game 2, Carey pounded out 16 hits and Lindsey Johnson (Fr./Wetumpka, Ala.) fired a three-hit shutout as Carey rolled to a 7-0 win.
WCU got things going in the bottom of the third inning as they recorded seven hits, including an RBI triple by Crow and RBI singles by Gilbert, Hannah Gasaway (Fr./Niceville, Fla.), and Branda Northrop (Sr./Poplarville) to open a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gilbert drove in her second run
of the game with an RBI double and Carey capped the scoring with an RBI triple by Brianna Harding (So./Petal) in the fifth inning.
Mary Blair Odom led WCU at the plate going 3-for-4. Gilbert, Monk, Kendall Theriot (Fr./Denham Springs, La.), and Anna Kennedy (Fr./Taylorsville) each added two hits.
Lindsey Johnson was outstanding in the circle as she allowed just three hits and struck out six in the complete-game effort.
