HATTIESBURG – William Carey wrapped up the regular season with a series sweep of Loyola University, defeating the Wolfpack 10-0 in Game 3 Saturday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.
It was all Carey as it took an early 3-0 lead in the third. The Crusaders extended the lead by adding two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Jake Smith (Jr./Poplarville) and Pablo Torres (Jr./San Juan, Puerto Rico). WCU added another run the fifth and dealt the final blow in the sixth as Jonathan Turner (Sr./McComb) sent one over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Devin Smith (Sr./Franklinton, La.) was brilliant on the mound as he pitched a complete game, scattering six hits walking just two batters while striking out eight.
Offensively, WCU was led by Turner who finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. Kyle Bayles (Sr./Jackson) went 3-for-3 while Caleb Ledet (Sr./Houma, La.) finished 2-for-3.
WCU is back in action on Wednesday, May 1 at 1 p.m. as it’ll take on the University of Mobile in first round action of the 2019 SSAC Baseball Championship as Paterson Field in Montgomery.
