HATTIESBURG – William Carey baseball picked up a mid-week victory, defeating No. 25 LSU-Shreveport 10-2 Tuesday night at Milton Wheeler Field.
The Crusaders got things rolling in the bottom of the first inning, as Sloan Dieter (Sr./Lake Charles, La.) drove in one run on a single to center field, and then WCU got back-to-back RBI doubles by Jonathan Turner (Sr./McComb) and Jake Smith (Jr./Poplarville) to open a 3-0 Carey lead. A wild pitch by the Pilots brought across the final run of the inning.
WCU got two more runs in the third and one run in the fifth and sixth innings to open an 8-1 lead. The Crusaders added to their lead in the seventh as Blake Freeman (Jr./New Orleans) drove in two more runs on a single to left center field to make it 10-1.
The Crusader pitching staff was stellar as they stymied the Pilot offense all night, holding them to just three hits and allowing two runs.
Devin Smith (Sr./Franklinton, La.) went five innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, while striking out three to pick up the win.
William Carey was led at the plate by Turner, who went 4-4 and two RBI, and Pablo Torres (So./San Juan, Puerto Rico) added three hits and an RBI while Smith, Dieter and Kyle Bayles (Sr./Jackson) all finished with two hits each.
WCU is back in action Friday, as it travels to Montgomery to take on No. 4 Faulkner University in SSAC play. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Harrison Baseball Complex.
