HATTIESBURG – Dylan Spiers (Sr./Carriere) allowed just two hits in six innings of relief work as No. 6 William Carey downed No. 25 Webber International, 6-5 in 11 innings on Friday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.
Carey was its own worst enemy in the first inning as a WCU error led to the first run of the game for the Warriors and then the Crusaders fell even further behind in the top of the third when Chris Medina belted a two-run home to help the visitors open a 3-0 lead.
However, the Crusaders rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, JT Wright (Jr./Laurel) ripped a two-run double and Marcus Buckley (Jr./Ocean Springs) followed with an RBI to tie the game at 3. Tanner Estill (Fr./Petal) then scored on a Warrior error and David Pimentel (Sr./Nashville) capped the five-run inning with an RBI single. Webber answered back with runs in the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game at 5.
Spiers entered the game for WCU in the sixth inning and was stellar. The senior allowed just two hits and struck out four as the game headed to extra innings. In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Spencer Cayten (Jr./Purvis) led off the inning with a double off the wall in left center and eventually advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Cayten then raced home on a wild pitch by reliever Donovan Bertoncini to score the winning run.
The Crusaders are back in action tonight at 7 pm as they take on Campbellsville (Ky.)
