HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss junior right-handed pitcher Walker Powell earned co-Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award for games ending March 24, Monday, in an announcement by the league office.
Powell collected his first complete-game of his career, a three-hit shutout of Old Dominion, who entered the weekend with a .297 team batting average.
The Fayetteville, Ark., native retired 10 batters in a row at one point in the game and allowed just two runners to reach second – none after the third inning. Powell also got ODU to hit into 15 groundouts in the contest.
Powell, a preseason C-USA selection by the league’ coaches, improved to 2-0 and saw his ERA fall to 2.12.
This is the second weekly award for Walker this season, as well as the second for his career. FIU sophomore left-hander Logan Allen shared the award.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow when they travel to Metairie, La., to face Nicholls State at Zephyr Field at 6:30 p.m.
