SUMRALL — Greene County quarterback Jacob Mitchell picked a good night to have a career night.
Mitchell tossed a career-high six touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 42-7 thumping of Sumrall at Lions Field in the Region 7-4A finale on Friday night.
With the win, it secured the No. 2 seed for Greene County (8-3) and it will host Lanier next Friday night, while Sumrall (8-3) is the fourth seed and will travel to South Pike Friday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
“I thought offensively early on we struggled just because of the coverage they were showing on defense, but defensively we were consistent like we’ve always been all year,” said Greene County coach Michael King. “They are a zone team and playing man to man, so we made some adjustments and got our running back in the passing game. That was huge.”
The Wildcats scored on their first drive of the game to go up 7-0 on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Kevin Dortch with 10:24 left in first quarter.
Two drives later, Mitchell hit Santez Cambell on a 41-yard touchdown pass to put Greene County up 14-0 with 3:01 left in first quarter.
The play of the game came on the last play of the second quarter when Mitchell took the snap and scrambled to the right and threw the ball up for grabs that ended up falling into the hands Que Washum for a 23-yard touchdown pass to put Greene County up 21-0 at halftime.
“We have receivers that can make plays and we worked on it all week to get off of man coverage and that really helped us out,” Mitchell said. “I rolled out and saw Washum and I threw it up and he made the play.”
Mitchell would hit Washum on another score from 51 yards out, Cambell on a 27-yarder and Dortch on a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Mitchell ended the game 19-of-29 for 363 yards and six touchdowns.
“Throws that they were given us were downfield and tonight was one of those nights we connected,” King said. “We’ve been pleased with our kids the last few weeks, we’ve been getting it together on offense and defense has been consistent. Getting the second seed is huge so we have a home playoff game.”
Dannis Jackson scored the lone Sumrall touchdown on a 1-yard touchdown run with 28 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the Greene County lead to 28-7.
Sumrall only had 198 yards of offense.
“We didn’t play good and we’ve been struggling on offense lately,” said Sumrall coach Shannon White. “Greene County is a really good team, so defensively we struggled tonight. South Pike is good team and one of the top offenses in 4A, so we got our hands full.”
