Twelve sign from Oak Grove, Hayes chooses Southern MissBy ANDREW ABADIE,
OAK GROVE – For the second year in a row, Oak Grove had players in the double-digits sign National Letters of intent on Wednesday.
The Warriors had a total of 12 seniors sign with three notably signing with Division 1 schools.
“It is pretty awesome to see that you have 12 guys sign at once to play at the next level,” Causey said. “It is a big class and seven going to Pearl River [Community College], one to Hinds CC, East Mississippi CC, Kennesaw State, [Louisiana-Monroe] and Southern Miss. To me, it shows just how good of a senior group we had this season. It is one of the bigger classes we’ve had, and it kind of compares to last year’s class.”
Notably, wide receiver Brandon Hayes signed with Southern Miss. Hayes finished with this past season with 53 catches going for 820 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hayes also finished in third place in the 6A track and field state championships in the 100m dash in 2019.
“Southern Miss is getting a heck of a football player,” Causey said. “He’s one of the fastest kids that I’ve had the privilege of coaching. He’s a guy who I think they are expecting him to play some this coming year. It is going to be nice to go watch him play with other guys that we have there right now. I’m excited about that.”
For Hayes, his decision was based on wanting to stay close to home.
“A big part of the recruitment process was staying close to my family,” Hayes said. “My family is very important to me. If you look at the stats, [USM] throws the ball a lot, and with me playing wide receiver, I wanted to go somewhere that they would air it out and that’s what they do.”
Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson has high expectations for the Oak Grove receiver.
“He’s got speed," Hopson said. "I just like Brandon a lot. I see the potential to be a great football player. I see a great Southern Miss wide receiver. He’s a guy that can do everything with a football. It’s kind of hard to find a guy with that type of length and that type of speed.”
Trenton Jackson signed with Kennesaw State and Javarian Jenkins signed with ULM. Jaylen Knight signed with Hinds CC and quarterback Damon Stewart signed with East Mississippi CC.
Pearl River Community College signed Oak Grove’s seven other players who are Eric Robinson, Tavion Smith, Caleb Fortenberry, Liam Breithaupt, Joey Griffith, Nick Milsap and Tyree Jackson.
