Purvis coach Perry Wheat is stepping down as the Tornadoes’ head football coach, he announced Friday. The thought of resigning was on his mind a lot lately, and he thought now was a good time to make it official.
He wanted to give the program the opportunity to find a new coach in time for spring football practice.
“I think sometimes you just kind of know,” he told PineBeltSPORTS. “I thought about it a littlie bit lately, and I think it’s the right time me and probably Purvis. It was a hard decision.
“The last couple of weeks, particularly, I thought it might be what I needed to do. Just a lot of factors involved.”
Wheat stressed the decision as a personal and family decision.
After numerous stops in his career, Wheat coached 12 seasons at Purvis with an 86-56 record. Since he became a head coach in the 1970s, he’s put together a 280-164 overall record, too.
Wheat isn’t sure what’s next for him, but he did say he’ll give himself a little time before making a decision about which route he wants to take next. He added, any of his assistant coaches would be a great fit for the job.
