It’s only Week 3, but the Presbyterian Christian Bobcats have gone through a lot already. In rebuilding mode, PCS has played a tough schedule with young and inexperienced players. Now, it’s dealing with injuries at key positions.
Issues keep adding up for the Bobcats, and there’s not much they can do about it.
“We’re a little beat up, and our numbers aren’t that great,” PCS coach Derek White said. “That’s not a good thing for us. We didn’t have a great week of practice last week because we’re battling a lot of sickness. We have to find a way to get better, respond this week and bounce back.”
Freshman quarterback Collin Necaise and senior Taylor Bailey are two notable players who were banged up Friday night.
Whether PCS was completely healthy and clicking in all aspects of the game might be irrelevant. It ran into a really good Adams County Christian team that has multiple players who will play at the next level.
Powered by three touchdowns by Jakarius Caston – one on offense, another on defense – ACCS was up big at halftime. The Rebels didn’t take out the starters, according to White, but he was fine with it because it gave his players more reps against a quality opponent.
“I saw a very inexperienced team that ran into a buzz saw,” White said. “They have a lot of speed and a lot of athleticism and we just got out-manned a little bit.”
This week, PCS returns home to face a 1-2 Simpson Academy team. The Cougars have dropped games to Parklane Academy, 31-8, and Oak Forest Academy, 22-14, and they beat Leake Academy 18-14.
They run a split-back veer offense that can bust a long gain at any moment, according to White. He goes on to say the Simpson Academy offense can almost lull a defense to sleep before busting a big play.
Defensively, the Cougars have played well in the last two games after allowing the 31 points to Parklane in the season opener. The unit will take their fair share of chances, which could help the Bobcats.
“They take some gambles and risk, and I can’t figure out why,” White said. “They’ll put you in some bad situations, so a lot of people they play will turn it over or they get a big play. They’re will to take a risk.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
