JACKSON – PCS had a record-setting weekend at the MAIS Overall State Track and Field Championships in Jackson. Last week’s 198 total points was the most scored by a PCS track and field team, and it was nearly 50 points better than second-place Jackson Prep’s 148 points.
After the six field events were scored Friday at Jackson Academy, PCS had already built a dominating 34-point lead on the field. PCS had at least two competitors compete in the each event except for one – the high jump.
“We had an incredibly well-rounded team,” PCS coach Joey Hawkins said. “We scored in all 18 events and got off to a great start Friday 74-40 and we never relinquished the lead. We performed at a very high level. Really, we scored every point we could.”
The state championship was the fourth in the school’s history, adding to the 2011, 2012 and 2013 state championships. Of Hawkins’ 21 seasons as a track coach at PCS and Jackson Academy, he’s collected 15 MAIS State Championships, including 11 straight while at JA.
The weekend was Hawkins’ last event as a head coach at PCS. He said it was a near-perfect day for the Bobcats, too.
“It was fun,” Hawkins said. “It was an honor to work with these kids. They came out every day to practice, they worked hard, set some clear goals and did it.”
The PCS Lady Bobcats took home third-place finish from the event.
