The Presbyterian Christian Bobcats claimed the MAIS AAAA-D1 State Championship Saturday at the school last weekend. The Bobcats had five first-place finishers in the two-day event, and consistently had competitors near the top of every event.
This was the first where MAIS held a championship for the different classifications, such as the AAAA-D1. PCS will now compete in the MAIS Overall State Championship this weekend in Jackson. The field events will take place on Friday at Jackson Academy, and the running events will be at Jackson Prep on Saturday. Both days start at 9 a.m.
In the one-mile, Jacob Williams claimed the top spot with a 4:43.25 run. Eric Robinson won the 400-meter dash with a 50.94 run and the Bobcats’ 4x400-meter relay team ran a 3:30.99 team to earn first place. In the field events, Tyson Keys and Thomas Holford helped PCS with first-place finishes, respectively. Keys won the shot put competition with a throw of 50-10, and Holford was first in the discus throw at 135-07.
PCS’ 95 total points blew away the competition. The next closest team was Jackson Prep in second with a 69.5 score. A total of 28 spots are available for athletes to qualify for state in, and PCS are sending 27 out of 28 spots to the state meet. Jackson Prep had 21 of 28 spots qualify.
“That’s a big difference,” PCS coach Joey Hawkins said. “But, what you look at is how many you qualify. We’ll have to perform.”
The 2018 season was PCS coach Joey Hawkins’ last one after announcing his retirement from the head football and track coach positions earlier this year.
“The other day, that was one of the greatest performance I’ve ever been involved with,” Hawkins said. “We (had personal records) in almost all the events.”
The Lady Bobcats finished fifth overall at the state meet.
PCS has won the overall State Championship in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
