CLARKSDALE – The No. 3 ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats ran their winning streak to 16 games here Saturday afternoon at the Eddie C. Smith Sports Complex.
In game one, Trace Henry (Mooreville) and Robbie Woody (Madison Central) each had four singles and three RBIs and starting pitcher Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) struck out 11 as the Bobcats beat Coahoma, 13-1 in seven innings. In game two, Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) homered and drove in three runs as Jones posted an 8-2 decision.
JCJC is now 35-7 overall and continues to lead the MACJC at 20-4. With one week left in the regular season, Pearl River is second at 19-5 and Meridian is third at 18-6.
The Bobcats go to Holmes for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday and end the regular season at Meridian on May 5.
Coahoma, 22-20 overall and 10-14 in the conference, travels to Mississippi Delta on Wednesday.
Bobcats 13, Tigers 1 (7 innings)
Henry and Woody – the one-two hitters in the lineup – were not the only ones to have big games for the Bobcats.
Three-hole hitter Luther Woullard (D’Iberville) had a double and two singles. Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) had three singles and scored three runs. R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) tripled, singled, scored three runs and drove in two. Mason added a single.
Brune went six innings, allowed one run, six hits, walked two and improved to 11-0 on the season. Brune leads the MACJC and is tied for first in the nation in wins. D.J. Alexander (Gretna, Louisiana) pitched the final inning, allowed no runs, no hits and struck out two.
Kyler Johnson had two singles for Coahoma. Marquelius Edgeston, Zac Gilder, Alexis Rodriguez and Deonteau Rieves added singles.
Austin Pace was the starter and loser. He went 6.2 innings, allowed 13 runs (10 earned), 17 hits, walked three and struck out five. Justin Fisher got the final out.
JCJC led 1-0 after one inning, 5-0 after two, 8-0 after three, 8-1 after five and scored five runs in the seventh.
Bobcats 8, Tigers 2
Mason’s three-run home run came in the sixth inning. He also had two singles.
Woullard and Miguel Morgan (South Jones) each doubled and singled, while Brown added two singles. Henry, Woody, Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) and Matthews added singles.
Jay Simpson (Presbyterian Christian School) went six innings and got the win to improve to 6-1. Simpson allowed two runs, three hits, walked three and struck out four. Payton Harris (Oak Grove) pitched the final inning and retired all three batters he faced.
Joe Gee singled twice for Coahoma and Edgeston had one single.
Wyatt Bailey was the starter and loser. He went 2.1 innings, allowed three runs, two hits and walked two. Eduardo Munoz, Rafael De Leon and Justin Fisher also pitched for CCC.
JCJC scored three runs in the third, led 4-1 after five and 8-2 after six.
