Southern Miss right-handed pitcher JB Middleton has been named the winner of the Ferris Trophy.
The award is given to the top collegiate baseball student-athlete in Mississippi, which is chosen by the state's college baseball coaches and a panel of Major League Baseball professional scouts. The award is named in honor of Mississippi baseball legend Boo Ferriss, who played in the Major Leagues and was also the long-time coach at Delta State.
This is the fifth time that a Golden Eagle has won the Ferris Trophy, joining Tyler Koelling (2011), James McMahon (2015), Nick Sandlin (2018) and Tanner Hall (2022).
Middelton holds a 9-1 record in 13 starts this season with 104 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 91.1 innings with an earned run average of 2.07. The junior leads the Sun Belt in strikeouts, opponents’ batting average (.166) and is second in ERA.
Through games of May 18, he ranks second nationally in WHIP (0.83), fifth in ERA, third in hits allowed per nine innings (5.22) and No. 16 in strikeouts.
Southern Miss' second baseman Nick Monistere was also named a semifinalist for the award.
