Hayward Glenn Anderson
91, of Hattiesburg
Hayward Glenn Anderson died Dec. 25, 2019. Services will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 3, 2020, at University Baptist Church. Visitation will be from from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Meridian to Walter F. and Sadie Key Anderson. He earned a BS in accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master's Degree from the University of Alabama. He served in the Korean War as a captain in the U.S. Army and later the Mississippi National Guard.
He taught Accounting at Pearl River Community College and The University of Southern Mississippi for more than 30 years. He was a charter member of the Hattiesburg Kiwanis Club, the Dugout Club, USM Alumni Association, local and state CPA societies. He was a charter member of University Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include his wife, Beth Anderson of Hattiesburg; one daughter, Debbie Moore of Long Beach; two sons, Glenn Anderson of Oak Grove and Tim Anderson of Petal; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
Hazel L. Bullock
76, of Hattiesburg
Hazel L. Bullock died Dec. 20, 2019, at Azalea Gardens Nursing Home in Wiggins. Services were Dec. 27.
Mrs. Bullock was a homemaker and an active member of the Biker Church in Hattiesburg.
Survivors include one son, Charles Byrd of Hattiesburg; one sister, Billie Faye Atwoodof Oloh; three brothers, Charles Holley of Sumrall, Dewey Blansett of Kokomo and Ronnie Blansett of Oloh; two grandsons, three great-grandchildren.
Joy Katherine Burkhalter
73, of Lumberton
Joy Katherine Burkhalter died Dec. 23, 2019, at her home. Services were Dec. 24 with burial in Union Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Burkhalter was a member of Full Gospel Jesus Name Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Katharene Fairley and Sadie Rena Walters; two brothers, James Mayes and Hershel Mayes; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Helen Irene Burnett
90, of Richton
Helen Irene Burnett died Dec. 27, 2019, at Forrest General Hospital. Services were Dec. 30 with burial in Eastside Cemetery.
Mrs. Burnett was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She retired as a seamstress after many years with MidSouth MFG in Richton.
Survivors include her daughters, Charlotte Courtney of Brooklyn, Debbie Newell of Richton; daughter-in-law, Becky Burnett of Petal; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Curtis Preston Byrd
64, of Hattiesburg
Curtis Preston Byrd died Dec. 25, 2019, at the Care Center of Laurel. Services were Dec. 27 with burial in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Matthew, Ryan, and Adam; his mother, Mary “Evelyn” Talbert; his sister, Thresia Madison; his brother, Roland Byrd.
Patricia Ann Carlisle
65, of Purvis
Patricia Ann Carlisle died Dec. 26, 2019, at Forrest General Hospital. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Mrs. Carlisle was born on Jan. 29, 1954, to Roy Hassell and Dorothea “Dimple” Hassell Jordan in Long Beach.
Survivors include her husband, Jasper Carlisle; two children, Caitlin Whitfield and Cole Carlisle; one sister, Audrey Freeman.
Fredrick Millard Clark
85, of Sumrall
Fredrick Millard Clark died Dec. 22, 2019. Services were Dec. 30 at Hickory Grove Methodist Protestant Church in Sumrall with burial in the Advance Cemetery.
Mr. Clark was born July 31, 1934, in Hattiesburg to Eugene and Jessie Mae Clark.
Born and raised in South Mississippi, Mr. Clark joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic during thhe Korean War. He graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla. He worked for Texas International. He became a contract grower for Sanderson Farms.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Trecie Clark, and his children- Sharon N. Clark, Peter A. and Katie Clark of Madison, Jennifer L. and Hobbie Regan, Fredrick M. Clark II and Mari Peterson, all of Sumrall and Bridget C. and Tim Reeves of Oak Grove; eight grandchildren.
Hamp Cook
86, of Hattiesburg
Services for Hamp Cook were held Dec. 27, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg with burial in the Lee Family Cemetery.
Mr. Cook played football at the University of Southern Mississippi where he later coached. He became a pro scout with the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a member of the M Club at USM and First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg.
Survivors include his children, Chuck Cook of Sumrall, Tracey Pineda Dickens and Kyle Cook, both of Hattiesburg; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
William Allen Denkler
97, of Hattiesburg
William Allen Denkler died December 21, 2019, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at at Trinity Episcopal Church, 509 W. Pine St., Hattiesburg, with burial in the Trinity Columbarium.
Mr. Denkler was born June 27, 1922, in Memphis, Tenn., to Louise and Henry Denkler. He was a retired commander in the U. S. Navy, serving as a fighter pilot, decorated for valor in World War II and the Korean War. He worked as an administrator with the School of Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi. He also served as the secretary-treasurer of the Dixie Utility Water Association. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Hattiesburg and a former member of St. Christopher’s in Pensacola. He was a member of Elks Lodge #599
Survivors include his wife, Betty Holt Denkler; two daughters, Karen Denkler and Patricia Denkler; two sons, Mark Denkler and Glenn Denkler; his brother, John Denkler; four stepchildren, Linda Gahlenbeck Kennedy, Amy Gahlenbeck Clarke, William Gahlenbeck and Gary Gahlenbeck; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Clayton F. Daughdrill
87, of Petal
Clayton F. “Smoky” Daughdrill died Dec. 25, 2019, at Magnolia Assisted Living in Ellisville. Services were Dec. 30 with burial in Clear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery .
Mr. Daughdrill was a member of Petal Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served in the Korean War. He worked for the Miss. Dept. of Transportation for 40 years.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry C. Daughdrill of Petal and Larry S. Daughdrill of Richton; his daughter, Melody Lorese Osborne of Hattiesburg; his sister, Geneva Valadie of Clinton; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Margie Rebecca McCullen
82, of Amory
Margie Rebecca “Beckie” Hodges McCullen died Dec. 28, 2019, at her home after a short illness. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 2 p.m. Dec. 30 at Amory First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wesley Pepper and the Rev. Don McCain officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery in Amory.
Mrs. McCullen was born Oct. 2, 1937, to Flake and Ruth Hodges. She graduated from Amory High School in 1955 and attended Mississippi State College for Women.
On Oct. 21, 1956, she married the love of her life, Joe Moore McCullen. They were blessed by God with two sons. She adored her husband and their family. Beckie returned to the “W” later in life and earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Education. She was passionate about children’s learning and impacted countless lives during her teaching career. She taught in the Amory School District until her retirement after 24 years of service.
Mrs. McCullen loved her church, Amory FUMC, where she sang in the choir for more than 40 years and served as chair of the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
She was active in all aspects of church life including the United Methodist Women, the Glove Ministry, vacation bible school, senior adult ministries, and serving home communion.
She was also a lifetime member of Junior Auxiliary, the Aurora Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge with friends, vacationing at the beach, and traveling both abroad and in the U.S. She loved reading a good book and knitting. However, her favorite pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all who affectionately knew her as “Meme.”
Her strong faith in God gives her family and friends comfort knowing that she is with her Lord and Savior. The memories Meme made, with the ones she loved, will be cherished forever.
Survivors include her sons, Brian H. McCullen (Cathy), Corinth; David M. McCullen, Hattiesburg; grandchildren, Catie Haynes (Dexter), Baldwyn; Luke McCullen, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Elizabeth McCullen, Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, John Dexter Haynes III and Cate Corrigan Haynes; nieces and nephews, Pam Williams, Mary Ann Foster (Don), Ira “Top” B. McCullen III (Kathy), Amy (Jim) Smith; as well as many close cousins and family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe McCullen.
Pallbearers were Jon Alexander, Joe Brennan, Stephen Fairley, Greg Harris, Tommy Hodges, Ira B. McCullen III, and “Coach” Larry Marett.
