For the second consecutive summer the Sixth Street Museum District will host a variety of educational and entertaining events where students will have the opportunity to learn and discover in a fun environment that fosters learning.
Storytime with a Soldier – (June 7 & 21 at 10 a.m.)
African American Military History Museum, 305 E. Sixth Street
Storytime is a great experience for children in pre-K through 3rd grade. Children will interact with a uniformed military veteran who will read a book, answer questions, have their photograph taken with the soldier and participate in an arts and crafts activity that is themed in concert with the book. This fun discovery teaches children to appreciate reading, our military and those who serve.

Discovery Tour Days – (Scheduled on a mutually agreed upon day and time available in June and July)

Guests to the African American Military History Museum can select the date, time and theme they would like to enjoy. Tour themes are: “aviation,” “playing the past,” “stars and stripes” and “music.”

Beyond the Selfie Photography Camp – (June 17 – 19 and June 24 – 26 from 9 a.m. – Noon.)
Historic Eureka School, 410 East Sixth Street
Through creativity and experimentation, youth ages 13 – 17 years of age will learn to express themselves through photography. The camp will provide a comprehensive introduction to DSLR (digital) camera work while also incorporating phone photography techniques.
Cost to participate is $85 and the registration deadline is June 3. Scholarships will be considered based in order of the request. Reservations can be made by calling (601)-450-1942.
60 Year Anniversary Freedom Summer – Youth Civic Engagement and Leadership Camp –(June 24 – 28 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
Historic Eureka School, 410 East Sixth Street
This camp is for rising 7th and 8th graders with the goals of:
- Cultivating their interests and passions to become engaged and responsible citizens in their community.
- Enhancing students’ understanding of representative democracy and their role and responsibilities as citizens.
- Strengthening their leadership skills and confidence to help generate ideas and solve problems for the betterment of their communities.

Needham Jones Bootcamp – (July 8 – 10, 15 and 16 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
African American Military History Museum, 305 East Sixth Street
The Needham Jones Bootcamp is designed to equip young men 12 – 15 years of age with necessary skills to successfully navigate the upcoming school year as well as life.
There is no cost to participate thanks to generous donors. There is a limit of 15 spaces available.
